imageboards
Anonymous picture forums
Imageboards are online forums organized around the posting of images, with text discussion often secondary or optional.
Unlike traditional forums, imageboards typically feature anonymous posting, minimal moderation, and threads that disappear once they fall off the page.
The format originated in Japan and spread globally through sites like 4chan, becoming notorious for both creative meme culture and toxic content.
The meme started on an obscure imageboard before going mainstream.
