hypodermic needle
Skin-piercing medical instrument
A hypodermic needle is the hollow, sharp-pointed metal tube attached to a syringe, designed to pierce the skin for injecting substances into or withdrawing fluids from the body.
The term hypodermic means "under the skin," distinguishing these needles from those used for suturing or other purposes.
In casual usage, people often say hypodermic needle when they mean the entire syringe-and-needle assembly: The nurse prepared the hypodermic needle for the vaccination.
