huntsman spiders
Leggy wall-dwellers
Huntsman spiders are large, flat-bodied spiders found in warm climates worldwide, named for their speed and hunting method—they chase down prey rather than spinning webs.
Their legspan can exceed six inches, making encounters startling, though they're generally harmless to humans.
They often enter homes seeking shelter or prey: A huntsman the size of my hand was on the ceiling.
