Tarantulas is the plural of tarantula, a large hairy spider found in warm regions.
Despite their fearsome appearance, most tarantulas are relatively harmless to humans—their bite is painful but rarely dangerous.
They're popular as exotic pets: She keeps tarantulas in terrariums.
The name comes from Taranto, Italy, where a different spider's bite was once blamed for a dancing mania.
