hoverboards

Wheeled standing transporters

Hoverboards come in two varieties.

The original is a fictional levitating skateboard, popularized by the *Back to the Future* films—a board that floats above the ground.

The real-world hoverboard, appearing in the 2010s, doesn't hover at all but rolls on two self-balancing wheels: She rides her hoverboard to school.

The name stuck despite the lack of actual hovering.
