rumble seat
Folding exterior bench
A rumble seat is an exterior folding seat in the back of an automobile, opening from what would otherwise be the trunk space.
Popular on coupes and roadsters of the 1920s and 1930s, it offered extra passenger capacity at the cost of exposure to weather: We rode in the rumble seat with the wind in our hair.
The feature disappeared as enclosed sedans became standard.
