carburettor

Air-fuel mixing chamber

A carburettor is a device in internal combustion engines that mixes air with fuel vapor before it enters the cylinders.

Until the late twentieth century, carburettors were standard in automobiles; electronic fuel injection has since replaced them in most vehicles.

The spelling carburettor is British; Americans write carburetor.

Informally shortened to carb.
