hornbeams
Dense-wooded deciduous trees
Hornbeams are deciduous trees of the genus Carpinus, native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
They have smooth gray bark, serrated leaves, and exceptionally hard, dense wood—the name refers to the horn-like toughness of the timber.
Hornbeams are often used for hedging because they retain their dead leaves through winter: The hornbeams formed a dense windbreak along the property line.
