holy fools
Blessed idiotic mystics
Holy fools are people who adopt unconventional, seemingly irrational behavior as a form of religious devotion.
The tradition appears especially in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, where such figures renounce social respectability to pursue spiritual purity—living as beggars, speaking in riddles, or feigning madness.
Their apparent foolishness is understood as divine wisdom that exposes worldly pretense: The holy fool wandered the streets barefoot, rebuking the powerful.
The concept extends to anyone whose radical sincerity makes them appear naive or crazy by conventional standards.
