lunatics
Those completely unhinged
Lunatics are people considered mentally deranged or wildly foolish.
The word comes from the ancient belief that the moon caused periodic insanity.
Today it's mostly informal, describing people who behave recklessly or irrationally: The lunatics have taken over the asylum.
As a clinical term for the mentally ill, it's obsolete and offensive.
