spiritual poverty
Inner barrenness, hungering
Spiritual poverty describes an inner emptiness or lack of meaning, purpose, or connection to something greater than oneself.
It may refer to a life focused entirely on material concerns at the expense of deeper values: Despite his wealth, he lived in spiritual poverty.
In some religious traditions, particularly Christianity, spiritual poverty (or "poverty of spirit") is paradoxically a virtue—a humble recognition of one's dependence on God rather than a deficiency to be overcome.
