holy city

Pilgrimage destination center

A holy city is a place considered sacred by a religion—a center of pilgrimage, worship, or spiritual significance.

Jerusalem is a holy city to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Mecca to Muslims; Varanasi to Hindus.

The phrase often appears with the definite article when a religion has one preeminent sacred place: the Holy City.

Any deeply revered destination might be called someone's holy city: Nashville is the holy city of country music.
