the underworld
Domain of dead
The underworld is the realm of the dead in mythology—a shadowy place beneath the earth where souls go after death: Orpheus descended to the underworld to retrieve Eurydice.
By extension, the underworld refers to the criminal element of society, organized crime operating beneath legitimate social structures: He had connections to the underworld.
Both senses share the idea of a hidden world existing below the visible one.
