Sodom

Brimstone-destroyed ancient city

Sodom was a city in the Bible destroyed by God along with Gomorrah for the wickedness of its inhabitants.

The name survives in references to divine punishment for sin and in the word sodomy, which derives from the story's traditional interpretation as condemning homosexual acts.

Sodom and Gomorrah often appears as shorthand for places of extreme vice or immorality deserving destruction.
