holocausts
Wholesale destruction by fire
Holocausts is the plural of holocaust, meaning large-scale destructions or massacres, especially by fire.
The word applies to catastrophic losses of life: The atomic holocausts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended World War II.
Before the mid-twentieth century, holocaust was simply a word for devastating destruction; now it inevitably evokes the Nazi genocide of European Jews. (Capitalized Holocaust refers specifically to that genocide.)
