paper trail

Sequential written evidence

A paper trail is a series of documents that record a sequence of events or transactions, allowing someone to trace what happened and who was responsible.

The term comes from physical paperwork but now includes electronic records: The accountant followed the paper trail back to the fraudulent invoices.

Investigators, auditors, and journalists follow paper trails to establish facts.

To leave a paper trail is to create records that could later serve as evidence—sometimes deliberately, sometimes carelessly.
