harriers
Low-flying raptors
Harriers are medium-sized hawks known for flying low over open ground while hunting.
They have long wings and tails, and a distinctive owl-like facial disc.
The northern harrier is the most common species in North America.
Separately, harriers are cross-country runners, from the sport's origins in chasing hares across fields.
A harrier is also a breed of hound used for hunting hares.
