hardcovers

Books with boards

Hardcovers are books bound with rigid protective boards, typically covered in cloth or paper.

The term distinguishes them from paperbacks, which have flexible covers.

Hardcovers are usually the first edition format for new releases and cost more: I'll wait for the paperback—I can't afford hardcovers.

Also called hardbacks.
