hap

Old word: luck

Hap is an archaic or literary word for luck, chance, or fortune—what happens to befall someone.

It survives mainly in derivatives: happy (favored by hap), happen (to come about by hap), hapless (without luck), perhaps (by hap), and haphazard.

As a verb, to hap is to occur by chance: Whatever haps, I'll be there.
