transpire

Happen, become known

Transpire has two main uses.

The older, more formal sense means to become known or come to light: It transpired that he had been lying all along.

The newer sense means to happen or occur: No one knows what transpired during the meeting.

This second use, though common, is sometimes criticized as pretentious when "happen" would do.

In biology, transpire describes the process by which plants release water vapor through their leaves.
