Finger skin nuisance
A hangnail is a small strip of skin that has torn away from the side of a fingernail, remaining attached at one end.
Despite the name, it involves skin rather than nail.
Hangnails catch on things and hurt disproportionately to their size: I kept snagging my hangnail on everything until I finally clipped it.
