hangnails

Painful finger skin

Hangnails are small strips of torn skin at the edge of a fingernail, typically along the cuticle.

Despite the name, they involve skin rather than nail.

They catch on fabric, sting when touched, and invite compulsive picking that often makes them worse: I keep getting hangnails in winter when my hands are dry.
