nailbed

Beneath the keratin

The nailbed is the layer of skin beneath a fingernail or toenail.

It's visible through the translucent nail plate and contains blood vessels that give healthy nails their pinkish color.

Injuries to the nailbed—from crushing or infection—can cause the nail to separate or grow abnormally: She bruised her nailbed slamming it in the car door.
