hajji

Completed sacred journey

Hajji is an honorific title for a Muslim who has completed the hajj—the pilgrimage to Mecca that is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

The title conveys respect and religious accomplishment: Hajji Ibrahim returned from Mecca a changed man.

In U.S. military slang from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, hajji became a derogatory term for any Arab or Middle Eastern person, regardless of their actual religion or pilgrimage status.
