gypsies
Nomads without roots
Gypsies is the traditional English name for the Romani people, an ethnic group originating in northern India who migrated to Europe centuries ago.
The term derives from "Egyptian," reflecting a mistaken belief about their origins.
While still common, many consider it offensive or outdated; Romani is now preferred in formal contexts.
Lowercase gypsy describes someone with a wandering lifestyle: She lived like a gypsy, never staying anywhere long.
This figurative use can itself give offense.
