gypsy
Free-spirited rover
Gypsy is an informal and often offensive term for a Romani person—a member of an ethnic group with origins in South Asia who migrated to Europe centuries ago.
Many Romani consider the term a slur.
In lowercase, gypsy describes a wandering or free-spirited lifestyle: She lived like a gypsy, never staying anywhere long.
A gypsy cab is an unlicensed taxi.
The word carries romantic connotations of freedom and travel but also negative stereotypes of dishonesty and rootlessness. (Capitalized Gypsy specifically denotes the ethnic group.)
