gussets

Triangular clothing inserts

Gussets are triangular or diamond-shaped pieces of fabric inserted into a garment to add room, flexibility, or reinforcement—commonly at the underarm, crotch, or sides.

In engineering, a gusset is a bracket or plate that strengthens joints where structural members meet: steel gussets reinforcing the bridge joints.

The underlying idea is adding material at stress points.
