I-beams

Flanged structural members

I-beams are structural steel beams with an I-shaped cross-section—a vertical web connecting two horizontal flanges.

The shape provides high strength-to-weight ratio, making I-beams standard in building frames, bridges, and heavy construction: The warehouse skeleton was all exposed I-beams.

Also called H-beams or girders depending on proportions and regional usage.
