graveyards

Where tombstones stand

Graveyards are burial grounds, places where the dead are interred.

The term originally referred specifically to churchyards—land surrounding a church used for burials—while cemetery denoted any burial ground.

This distinction has largely faded: The old graveyard behind the church dates to the 1700s.

Figuratively, a graveyard is where things go to die or be forgotten: a graveyard for failed startups.

The graveyard shift is the overnight work shift, roughly midnight to 8 a.m.
