caskets

Final resting containers

Caskets are containers for burial—coffins, typically rectangular with a hinged lid.

The word sounds gentler than coffin, which is why American funeral homes prefer it.

Originally, a casket was a small ornamental box for jewelry or keepsakes, and this sense survives: a casket of love letters.

The burial meaning arose in 19th-century America.
