fireguard
Fireplace safety mesh
A fireguard is a protective screen placed in front of a fireplace to prevent sparks from escaping into the room and to keep children or pets from getting too close to the flames.
In British usage, the term also applies to a person who watches for fires, particularly during wartime blackouts or in forests.
