direct sowing

Ground-planted from seed

Direct sowing is planting seeds straight into the ground where they'll grow, rather than starting them indoors and transplanting seedlings.

Some plants—carrots, beans, radishes—do better with direct sowing because they dislike root disturbance.

The method is simpler but requires suitable weather and soil conditions: We direct sowed the lettuce after the last frost.
