gorgets
Throat protection plates
Gorgets are pieces of armor protecting the throat and upper chest, worn from medieval times through the Renaissance.
As armor became obsolete, gorgets shrank to decorative crescents worn by military officers as symbols of rank.
The term also applies to distinctive throat patches on birds: The ruby-throated hummingbird is named for the male's iridescent red gorget.
