ruffs
Elizabethan neck frills
Ruffs is the plural of ruff, a stiff circular collar of pleated fabric worn in the 16th and 17th centuries, framing the face like a wheel.
The word extends to similar features in nature—the ring of feathers or fur around a bird's or animal's neck.
A ruff is also a sandpiper with elaborate neck plumage.
In card games, to ruff is to play a trump card when you can't follow suit; ruffs are instances of such plays.
