glanders
Horses' bacterial scourge
Glanders is a serious bacterial disease primarily affecting horses, mules, and donkeys, though it can spread to humans.
The infection causes nodules and ulcers in the respiratory tract and skin.
Once common and often fatal, glanders has been largely eliminated from developed countries through testing and culling of infected animals.
