chatelaine

Keeper of keys

A chatelaine is the mistress of a castle or large household—the woman who runs domestic affairs.

The word also names an ornamental clasp or chain worn at the waist, from which keys, scissors, or other small implements hang: Her chatelaine jingled as she walked through the manor.

The accessory reflects the role—a symbol of household authority.
