crinoline

Victorian skirt scaffolding

A crinoline is a stiff petticoat or framework worn under a skirt to make it stand out from the body.

Originally made with horsehair fabric, crinolines later used hoops of steel or whalebone to create the dramatic bell-shaped silhouettes of mid-19th-century fashion.

The word now also refers to any stiff fabric used for lining or interfacing.
