stomacher

Ornamental bodice piece

A stomacher is a triangular or V-shaped decorative panel worn over the chest and stomach, filling the front opening of a woman's bodice or gown.

Common from the 15th through 18th centuries, stomachers were often elaborately embroidered, jeweled, or embellished: Her stomacher was studded with pearls.

The term occasionally appears in historical fiction or costume descriptions.
