genies

Wish-granting beings

Genies are supernatural beings from Arabian mythology, powerful spirits that can be summoned to grant wishes or perform tasks.

In folklore, a genie might be trapped in a lamp or bottle, bound to serve whoever releases it: He rubbed the lamp and a genie appeared.

The singular is genie or, in more traditional contexts, djinn or jinn.
