galley proofs
Printer's trial sheets
Galley proofs are preliminary printed versions of a text, produced for proofreading before final publication.
The term comes from the days of metal typesetting, when type was arranged in long trays called galleys.
Today galley proofs are usually digital or print-on-demand copies sent to reviewers and editors: The author received galley proofs to check for errors before the book went to press.
