leopard seals
Spotted polar hunters
Leopard seals are large Antarctic seals named for their spotted coats and predatory nature.
Second only to elephant seals in size among Antarctic seals, they hunt penguins, fish, and smaller seals with powerful jaws.
Their serpentine bodies and massive heads give them a distinctive, almost reptilian appearance.
A leopard seal lurked near the ice edge, waiting for penguins to dive in.
