frontierswomen

Women settling wilderness

Frontierswomen is the plural of frontierswoman—a woman who lives or lived on the frontier, particularly the American West during its period of settlement.

The term parallels frontiersmen but sees less use, partly because historical accounts focused on male settlers: The exhibit honored frontierswomen who homesteaded alone.
