halon
Flame-smothering chemical
Halon is any of several compounds containing bromine and fluorine, formerly used in fire extinguishers.
Halons suppress fire by interrupting the chemical reaction of combustion, making them effective on electrical and liquid fires.
Their production was banned in most countries after they were found to deplete the ozone layer, though existing systems remain in some aircraft and military applications.
