freons
Ozone-depleting refrigerants
Freons are a family of synthetic chemicals used as refrigerants, propellants, and solvents—the compounds that made air conditioning and aerosol sprays possible.
The name is a trademark but often used generically for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and related substances.
Most freons have been phased out internationally because they deplete the ozone layer.
