freakshows

Spectacles of anomalies

Freakshows were exhibitions displaying people with unusual bodies or abilities—giants, conjoined twins, bearded women—common entertainment from the 19th century through the mid-20th.

The term now applies figuratively to any spectacle of dysfunction or chaos: The meeting devolved into a total freakshow.

The singular freakshow is more common; the plural emphasizes multiple instances or venues.
