foul poles
Boundary line indicators
Foul poles are the tall vertical markers at the outfield corners of a baseball field, positioned where the foul lines meet the outfield fence.
Despite their name, they mark fair territory—a ball striking a foul pole is a home run.
The poles help umpires judge whether fly balls clearing the fence are fair or foul: The ball wrapped around the foul pole for a game-winning homer.
