smokebox
Steam exhaust collector
A smokebox is the chamber at the front of a steam locomotive where exhaust gases collect before exiting through the smokestack.
It creates the draft that pulls air through the firebox and boiler tubes, making combustion possible.
The smokebox also houses the blastpipe, which uses exhaust steam to increase draft: The engineer opened the smokebox door to inspect the tubes.
