noise gate
Threshold-based audio muter
A noise gate is an audio processing device or software that silences a signal when it falls below a set threshold.
When the input is quiet—between drum hits, vocal phrases, or guitar notes—the gate closes, cutting unwanted background noise like hum or bleed from other instruments.
When the signal rises above the threshold, the gate opens to let sound through.
Essential in recording studios and live sound: Set the noise gate tight on the snare mic to keep the hi-hat out.
