firebed
Flame's resting place
A firebed is the layer of hot coals or burning material at the base of a fire, where combustion is most intense.
In fireplaces and wood stoves, the firebed provides sustained heat after flames die down: Let the firebed build up before adding larger logs.
The term also applies to the prepared surface where a fire is built, especially in camping or outdoor cooking.
