Film subtitles are text displayed at the bottom of a screen showing dialogue or narration translated into another language, or transcribing the original language for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.
Unlike dubbing, subtitles preserve the original audio: I prefer watching foreign films with subtitles rather than dubbed.
Subtitles may also translate on-screen text like signs or letters.
